The Manhattan Project Map that shows Boston and where I found it
When I discovered that my grandfather was closely associated with the Manhattan Project’s Boston Office, I wanted to find a map that showed there was a Boston Office. That map turned out to be elusive. Pretty much every map I could find showed the three secret cities: Oak Ridge, Tennessee; Los Alamos, New Mexico; Hanaford, Washington.
Most included Berkeley and Chicago, where scientists who weren’t permanently at Los Alamos were located. Manhattan was referenced but frequently Washington, DC, was also omitted. When I found the map below, which showed Boston as well as Trail, British Columbia, both places where my grandfather was associated, I was elated. And electronically the map looks pretty good, but in print it doesn’t look quite as crisp. It’s hard to see that under Boston it says Stone and Webster Engineering Corp. And that under Trail it says (Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co.) (Heavy Water Project).
