Saturday was spent skiing and shopping. On Sunday, Pearl Harbor was attacked, and on Monday, war was declared, and the Macdonald family’s lives were upended. Donald “Mac” Macdonald becomes a part of the Manhattan Project. His wife, Bertha, navigates blackouts, rationing, and her mother’s declining health. Eldest son Sonny trains in extreme conditions with the 10th Mountain Division and goes into battle in Italy. Youngest son Ig serves as a messenger in the Manhattan Project’s Boston office. By war’s end, this close-knit family has been altered forever.
